Description
Of all the horrors the human race has experienced and perpetrated over many millennia, one of the darkest chapters was undoubtedly the widespread, systematic murder of six million Jews—two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population—by Nazi Germany in the 1930s and 1940s during what has come to be known as the Holocaust. It is nearly impossible to fathom today the hatred, terror, violence, and sheer inhumanity of these atrocities, and yet the importance of ensuring this dark history is preserved for future generations cannot be overstated. In this moving documentary volume, Holocaust survivors who later settled in Wisconsin recount not only the horrors they witnessed but also the resilience and perseverance of the Jewish people. With words and photographs, they describe the richness of pre-war Jewish life in Europe; the advent of prescriptive laws, arrests, and deportation; the unspeakable horrors of the Nazi camps; and ultimately the liberation and postwar experiences of the survivors.
While Jewish people across Europe all suffered for their ethnic origins or religious beliefs, no two stories are alike. Remembering the Holocaust allows us to see the survivors as individuals, each with their own perspectives. The fourteen interviews shared in the book assign names and faces to what might otherwise be an abstract reckoning of terror and inhumanity. Wrenching and heartbreaking though the stories are, they also serve as testaments to courage and hope.
