Description

John Nelligan worked as a lumberjack deep in the North Woods during the heyday of Wisconsin’s timber boom. Born in Canada in 1852, a teenaged Nelligan started out as a humble laborer before working his way up through the ranks to become a lumber foreman. He worked and lived in Canada, Maine, and Pennsylvania before coming to Wisconsin in 1871. In John Nelligan: Wisconsin Lumberjack, young readers will learn what surviving and sawing wood for a living was like more than a hundred years ago—from the story of one man who lived it!

Author John Zimm takes young readers on a journey through the world of logging and life in the North Woods as witnessed by John Nelligan. The book explores the different areas of work in the logging industry, explains how lumber made its way from deep in the forests to sawmills many miles downstream, and what a typical day was like in a lumber camp. Drawing on Nelligan's own writings, John Nelligan: Wisconsin Lumberjack brings that world to life through stories and historical photos, and it features a timeline, a glossary, activities, and a discussion guide to enhance the learning experience.
