Description

Frank Lloyd Wright is best known for his urban and suburban houses. Lesser known are the more than 40 summer “cottages” he designed in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ontario. Many of the early summer cottages have a rustic feel and are not as easily recognized as Wright’s prolific year-round domestic designs. Among them is a stunning estate on Delavan Lake in southern Wisconsin called Penwern—presented here in glorious detail by photographer and journalist Mark Hertzberg, bringing to life a Midwestern architectural treasure.

Commissioned by Chicago capitalist Fred B. Jones around 1900, Penwern was designed with generous proportions and meticulously landscaped grounds, beckoning the owner’s business friends to relax and play at a Wright-style Adirondack camp. The home has received national and state recognition for its architectural and historical significance, and its current stewards have dedicated themselves to restoring the estate to Wright’s vision, ensuring its future. Featuring beautiful color photographs, plus vintage black and white pictures and original Wright drawings, this book transports readers back to the glory days of gracious living and entertaining on the lake.

Closing quotation mark
Ron McCrea
Author of “Building Taliesin: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Home of Love and Loss”

“Mark Hertzberg follows Wright’s imperative to connect architecture with inhabitant, giving us a portrait of architect, client, and several generations of stewards. He provides us with a rare and complete understanding of the life of a home and the dynamic relationships among those who have a stake in creating and sustaining that life through time. A joy for the Wright enthusiast and anyone who cares about historic architecture.”

—Stuart I. Graff, President and CEO, Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation
