Additional Comments
One of the oldest houses in the district, completed in 1858, is the William and Jane Leitch House, among Wisconsin’s handsomest Gothic Revival houses. The Leitch House’s use of Madison sandstone, rather than wood, is unusual for the style, but many other features are typical, including the multiple steeply pitched gables, the bargeboard trim decorated with quatrefoils, and the iron finials at the apex of each gable. A large belvedere with Tudor arches and gables surmounts the steeply pitched slate roof, and wooden porches ornamented with Tudor arches and jigsaw-cut brackets shelter the facade. English-born William Leitch served three terms as Madison's mayor.
