Additional Comments
127 East Frederick Street Webster A. and Louise Brown-Malcolm Roys Jeffris House. This two-story frame Colonial Revival house was erected for Webster A. and Louise Brown circa 1913 (Oneida County deeds, 67:426; City of Rhinelander tax rolls). It is finished with clapboards, trimmed with simple cornice and corner boards, has eight-over-eight double-hung sash windows, and an enclosed, front-gabled entry porch with corner boards, and returned eaves. The front door is framed with sidelights and a fanlight. Webster A. Brown (1885-?) was the son of Anderson W. Brown, one of the founders of Rhinelander. Webster and his brother, Luther, were partners in the Brown Land and Lumber Company (founded circa 1913), and the Brown Timber Company (established circa 1919). Both companies were still in business in 1927, at which time Webster Brown still lived in this house (Rhinelander City Directories). By 1930, Malcolm Roys Jeffris owned and occupied this house. Jeffris (1886-4/17/1963) was born in Janesville and educated at Brown University. In 1913, he took over management of the Jeffris family's extensive timberlands in northern Wisconsin, work he continued until retiring in 1957. He made Rhinelander his home in 1927. While in Rhinelander, Jeffris acted as director and president of the Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce, chair of the Oneida County chapter of the American Red Cross, and was a member of the board of directors of the First National Bank from 1931 until 1957 (Mead and Hunt, "Historic Property Reconnaissance Survey," p. 21). Jeffris owned this house until at least 1956 (Rhinelander City Directories). He died in Janesville.
