DESCRIPTION: This two story frame residence rests on a long rectangular plan with a brownstone foundation. Narrow clapboards cover the front end gable house designed in a vernacular Queen Anne style whose stylistic features here include a front end gable with return cornice that is shingled and projects at the peak and that is clapboard and recedes below. The front second story facade is further detailed with a pair of original rectangular coupled 25/1 sash windows in the center and a small square window to the side; both project slightly into the gable area. A continuous band runs at still level around the second story, and at lintel level on the first story. The front is highlighted by the rectangular bay window and decoratively carved S-scroll brackets at the corner and the recessed entry area with a projecting replacement gabled veranda in front. First and second story rectangular windows are evenly spaced along the sill wall. The interior is in very good repair and features a beautiful stairway. This house is one of four adjacent identical houses built ca 1888 the others of which have been substantially altered. SIGNIFICANCE: The vernacular Queen Anne style house is siginificant architecturally as a locally unusual and well preserved building that was made from a standard plan. Although other groups of identical houses survive in Ashland, none of these groups is represented by an intact example like this group is. 2017: New siding and new windows. 2022 - appearance unchanged
