Property Features
This building has some historical interest as the location of a store and the long-time location of a paint store. The businesses are not individually significant, but they do contribute to the overall development of commerce in the Main Street Commercial Historical District.
Built around 1881 for August Schiffler to house his dry goods store, this cream brick commercial building exhibits a projecting cornice ornamented with modillions and projecting wooden triangular pediment shaped window heads over long narrow windows on the second story. A rear one-story brick addition featuring several vehicular doors is located at the rear. A concrete block addition constructed to accomodate the painting and repair of automobiles in the 1920s extends the facilities in an L-shape that fronts on North Third Street.
The August Schiffler building is a vernacular building exhibiting the influence of the Italianate style. Although this building is not architecturally significant, the Schiffler building contributes to the historic architectural character of the Main Street Commercial Historic District.
