This building was one of a group of three blocks built for William Buchheit's grain dealing business. Please the record for 110 S. Third St. for a history of this firm. After Buchheit's tenure, the building housed several groceries.

This building is significant along with 110-114 S. Third St. for local history under National Register criterion A because it was part of the three block grain dealing business of William Buchheit. Please see the significance statement in the record for 110 S. Third St.

The final and most elaborate of the cream brick business block built by William Buchheit on South Third, this five-bay commission and storage building was built in the early 1880s. Characterized by a raised brick cornice articulated by a blind arcade and slender applied brick pilasters that extend across the facade as well as the south elevation. Raised brick round arched window hoods with white stone keystone accents linked by brick string courses form an arcade across the upper facade and along the second story of the south elevation. Rectangular windows with transoms and filled in arches further characterize the upper story of the former Buchheit Commission Building.

The double storefront of the Buchheit Building has been altered considerably using modern materials and wide board sidng extends across the upper part of both storefronts. The lower story of the south facade has been painted and the door and windows have been altered. A storefront on the two-story cream brick addition at the rear of the south elevation exhibits a round window on the second story and curved glass store windows.

The William Buchheit building is a vernacular building characterized by the round arches and blind arcading associated with the Romanesque Revival style. One of the few small commercial buildings to exhibit the Romanesque influence in Watertown, the Buchheit building shows much less Romanesque influence that the Platz and Brantd building 301 East Main (44-22). Although not architecturally significant, this early 1880s Buchheit Commission building contributes to the historic architectural character of the Main Street Commercial Historic District.
