This house has some historical interest as the home of Wiliam G. Pritzlaff, an important hardware merchant in Watertown. Pritzlaff contributed to the development of commerce with his successful hardware business. But because he was living elsewhere during the founding and formative years of his business, this house only has historical interest rather than significance in its association with him.
Built in the 1860s for John Cole after he sold his elaborate Italianate house at 802 No. 4th (28-22), this rectangular house is characterized by a low pitched hipped roof featuring overhanging eaves with decorative brackets. An off-set entrance with sidelighted door and transom window and rectangular windows with flat stone lintels further characterize the house. A one and a half story west addition with roof dormer and an open front porch with fieldstone supports have altered the original Italianate styled appearance of the house.
Although the Cole-Pritzlaff house has retained a fair degree of integrity as an example of the Italianate style, this house is not one of the better examples of the style. Other examples are the Hartwig house at 903 County Lane (27-32), the Prentiss house at 802 Clyman (43-26) and the Hill house at 700 Clyman (43-25).
