This boat haulover is located on an island at the Eureka Lock site. It consists of two metal rails approximately seven feet apart and a largely metal apparatus that was used to lift and carry smaller boats over the rails from one side of the island to the other. Related buildings: lock, lock tender's house, stable, dam, canal. The boat haulover at Eureka was installed in 1951 by the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineers for the closing of the Eureka Lock on July 27th of that year. It was a hand-operated, winch-type haulover used to haul smaller boats around the Eureka Dam and closed lock. In 1957 the haulover was rebuilt by the Corps. The Eureka haulover was one of six installed in 1951 by the Army Corps at a total cost of $148,125; the other five were built at the Berlin, White River, Grand River, Princeton and Montello locks. Of these six, the Eureka haulover is the only one remaining. It apparently has not been used since the Eureka Lock was reopened in 1958.
