Property Features
John Strange (1852-1923) was prominent as a local industrialist and known statewide as a politician. After an early career as a millworker, school teacher, and merchant, Strange formed subsequent partnerships in the lumber business with Henry Sherry and P.V. Lawson, Sr. After these partnerships dissolved, Strange started his own paper and wooden were companies. When efforts to expand his business coincided with the panic of 1893, Strange was forced out of the paper industry and into bankruptcy. Immediately involving himself in politics, Strange was elected Register of Deeds of Winnebago County. After being named assignee of a bankrupt paper company, his return to financial solvency was guaranteed when he used these earnings to buy back stock in his former business. His later career included a term as Lieutenant Governor of Wisconsin (1909), as well as holding various positions in industry.
The John Strange House is located near the Fox River on the southwest corner of Keys and Elm Streets. Situated on a small lot, the Strange House is a two-and-one-half story Queen Anne residence. The roof is multi gabled and the building configuration is irregular. The roof material is asphalt, the siding is aluminum, and the foundations are random stone. The fenestration consists of a variety of sizes of windows. The front entrance features a stoop with a large canopy supported by columns and decorated by spindlework. An attached garage with a solarium above adorns part of the southern facade.
2009-No apparent changes since previously surveyed in 1984.
