Additional Comments
THIS TWO STORY RETAIL BUILDING, CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN 1866 AND 1867 (SEE BIB. REF. A), WAS DESIGNED IN THE COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR STYLE. THE STRUCTURE FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION AND A SHINGLED, GABLE ROOF. THE REAR AND SIDE EXTERIOR WALLS ARE MADE OF STONE WHILE THE FACADE IS MADE OF BRICK. STONE INFILTRATES THE FACADE AS WELL, IN THE FORM OF STONE QUOINS, LINTELS AND SILLS. ORIGINALLY CAPPING THE SECOND STORY WAS A FLAT ROOF, BUT IT WAS REMODELED AS A GABLE ROOF IN THE 1980'S. (SEE BIB. REF. F). THE STRUCTURE IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THE NAMES HISTORICALLY LINKED WITH THIS BUILDING ARE INDICATIVE TO ITS COMMERCIAL VITALITY, WHICH SPANNED FROM 1864 TO 1929. THESE NAMES INCLUDE THE ISSAC WINN BUILDING (SEE BIB. REF. B), THE DAWE-WINN BUILDING, THE JOHN DAWE FLOUR AND FEED STORE, AND THE UREN GROCERY STORE, (SEE BIB. REF. D). THE GROCERY WAS IN BUSINESS FROM 1876 TO 1894 (SEE BIB. REF. A, G), AND THE HARDWARE WAS IN BUSINESS IN 1917 (SEE BIB. REF. G). THIS BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972. 2012- "Isaac Winn, a blacksmith, came to Mineral Point from England, arrived in 1853; first a miner, he "engaged in the mercantile business" in 1870. Businesses at this location were Uren's Grocery Store; John Dawe's Flour and Feed Store; J. Dawe Groceries and Provisions; William Vincent, cigar maker; Bennett Winn, barber; Charles Winn, barber; Cutler's Bar; Bob Harker's Barber Shop; and Lawinger's apartments." -from "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press.
