Additional Comments
THIS TWO STORY, HIGH VICTORIAN ITALIANATE HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1854. (SEE BIB. REF. A). IT FEATURES A T-SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, BRICK EXTERIOR WALLS, A WOOD TRIM, AND SHINGLED, MULTI-GABLE ROOFS. RISING ABOVE THE MAIN STRUCTURE IS A SQUARE SHAPED, HIP ROOFED TOWER. WOODEN BRACKETED EAVES APPEAR UNDER THE EAVES OF BOTH THE MAIN ROOFS AND THE TOWER ROOF. AN OPEN-DESIGNED FRONT PORCH HAS A HIP ROOF SUPPORTED BY INTRICATELY CARVED AND BRACKETED POSTS. DENTIL TRIM FURTHER DETAILS THE PORCH CORNICE. STONE LINTELS AND SILLS EMBELLISH THE WINDOWS THROUGHOUT THE DWELLING. A HIP ROOFED, SQUARE BAY WINDOW - DISTINGUISHED BY BRACKETS UNDER THE EAVES AND MOLDED WINDOW SURROUNDS - IS LOCATED ON THE FIRST STORY OF THE STREET-FACING OPEN GABLE END. AN IRON FENCE WHICH RUNS ALONG THE PROPERTY BOUNDRY IN THE FRONT WAS ERECTED IN 1890; IT WAS MANUFACTURED BY BARBED WIRE WORKS OF LA FAYETTE, INDIANA. (SEE BIB. REF. B). THE RESIDENCE IS IN GOOD CONDITION. INDIVIDUALS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS DWELLING AND THE DATES OF THEIR ASSOCIATION INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: WILLIAM LANYON SR., FROM 1853 TO 1900; AND SIMON LANYON, IN 1910. (SEE BIB. REF. A). WILLIAM LANYON, SR. WAS THE FOUNDER OF A LOCAL IRON FOUNDRY in 1848; ERGO, HE WAS A FOUNDRY FOUNDER. When he came to Mineral Point from Cornwall in 1840, he began working as a blacksmith and machinist. He then moved into the hardware, stove, and tinware business.
