Additional Comments
Ols symbol on facade. This office building and printing plant represents an example of the Chicago Commercial style in the District although the original design has been modified over time. The original block extends from the corner of Frankliand S. 9th Street to the main entrance. The portion of the building to the west o the main entrance is a later addition; however, great cre was taken to match the original design with the exception of continuing the store capitals on teh brick pilaster. The Manitowoc Herald Times Reporter is presently the only newspaper serving the community. The history of this newspaper, however, is actually the history of three publications. The Times Press was established in 1893 as a Republican weekly by editor H.G. Kress. In 1898 the Herald was founded as a daily newspaper by the Brandt Printing Company which also owned the Times Press. In October 1899, the Herald Press Publishing Company was founded with .G. Kress as President. The Herald was politically independent. The Manitowoc Daily News was founded in 1900 and remained as a competitor to the Herald until 1919 when the two merged. It was at that time that this buidlding was constructed. In 1935, publisher R.T. Bayne purchased the Two Rivers Reporter which was published separately by the same publishing company from that time until January 1973 when the historical backgorund continued present Herald Times Reporter was launched.
