A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. #650: Carriage House. Fine Queen Anne mansion featuring steeply gabled roofs with overhanging eaves supported by dentils. Palladian windows with columns between the windows in each gable end. Columns repeated supporting arches in third floor tower. Brick constructio in main block with three story stone tower and one story stoe side wing. A ceramic tile beltcourse runs between the first and second floors. Front and side gable corners are cutaway with overhanging carved brackets. Formal full pedimented front porch is supported by custers of Ionic columns flanking a curved archway. The pediment has a flora pattern carved in it. A large front window with wooden arched flanked by columns is on the front facade. The three story tower is topped by a conical roof. The Spindler house is considered significant as an intact example of the Queen Anne style. It is one of the very finest, intact eamples of this tyle in the city. The Spindler house was designed by noted local architect Christ H. Tegen who was also responsible for a number of other leading homes in the community. As such, it is one of the best remaining examples of his residential works in the community. The Spindler House was built for Charles E. Spindler, a retired Chicago businessman whose youth was spent in Manitowoc. Spindler was born in Germany but his family emmigrated to this country at an early age. His family settled in Manitowoc in 1858. In 1861, the young Charles, at that time just twenty years old, moved to Chicago. He saw brief service in the Civil War after which he went to work for several employers ending up in 1866, with Chicago Type Foundry. In 1869 this company was reorganized as Bernhart Brothers and Spindler. Spindler was Superintendent and Manager of that company until his retirement in 1880. It was following this retirement that he returned to Manitowoc to live and, in 1897, built this house.
