This two story Italianate style house has a square form with a large rctangular gable roofed addition at the rear. The main brick house has a hip roof with overhanging eaves decorated with brackets and a frieze. A two story wooden bay with a similar roof and decoration is on the west wall of the house. A two story similar roof and decoration is on the west wall of the house. A two story hipped roof ell projects from the southeast protion of the house. A one and one half story brick ell projects from the rear wall. It features gable roofed half story brick ell projects from the rear wall. It features gable roofed dormers, and L plan, an ell porch, and little other decoration. A turn of the century porch on the front facade was removed between 1974 and 1989.
The square form, hip roof, wide eaves, brackets, frieze, and two story bay are all elements of the style. While the rear addition is from an historic era, it is different from the main block of the house. But, it does not overly detract from the quality ofthe main block.
This house was the home of Andrew Spence, a merchant, between 1884 and 1897. It was the Dewey Family Boarding Hosue between 1903 and 1940. The rear addition was probably added just after the Dewey family acquired the property and converted it into a boarding house
This house is not historically significant at this time.
