A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. This two-story frame house is an excellent example of the Italianate style. Italianate features include low-pitched hip roof, overhanging eaves with brackets, tall first story windows, decorative window hoods, and full front porch. Built in 1864 for Thomas Lappin according to the design of Janesville architect Garry Nettleton. Lappin (1812-1891) was born in Ireland and became a pioneer merchant in Janesville. He opened he city's first store and built the large brick building, known now as the Lappin-Hayes block (AHI #87109), at the corner of Main and Milwaukee streets.
