Additional Comments
Peter Graven was born in Norway in 1857, immigrated to America in 1868, and moved his family to Downsville in 1878. Here, he found work at the Knapp, Stout, & Co., Company and eventually became manager at the company store. His future business partner, John Wilcox, also worked for the Knapp, Stout & Co., Company, managing the clothing department at the same store. In 1891, the two men decided to resign from their positions in the Knapp, Stout & Co., Company and start their own business. In the new partnership, Graven took care of the clerical work while Wilcox was the buyer.

The first building they operated from was located at 314 Main Street; however, when the business outgrew that building, they relocated to this building at 336 Main Street. Their business thrived in this location, and in 1925, the History of Dunn County named their business "one of the most important mercantile concerns of the city."
