Additional Comments
A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Locally designated 11-12-85. The house is a two-story brick masonry residence designed in the Italianate style. The foundation is also brick, and is separated by a watertable fro the first floor. The building has a low pitched hip roof, with a small triangular peak in the center of the west front elevation. It is a symmetrical design except that the entrance door is located to the north side of the facade. Each floor has three openings; those on the second floor are two over four double-hung sash with bracketed window hoods having a slight peak in the center. On th first floor, two over six double-hung sash are next to the larger entry opening, which has sidelights and a transom. These three openings have flat bracketed window hoods. The tall windows appear to be floor to ceiling in height. A frieze without brackets extends around the house under the eaves. (1882 photo - 50-4) The building is architecturally significant because it is a fine example of the Italianate style "cube" type house. The tall windows with bracketed hoods and the entry with sidelights and transom give the house an elegant appearance. The slight gable on the facade is a unique feature not found on most Italanate designs. Interestingly, it is reflected on each one of the window hoods and over the entry. It is also significant as one of the groups of brick Italianate houses in the Vine-Reversoir Historic District. The house was constructed in 1855. Originally this building was part of the Vine/Reservoir Historic District (listed: 8/2/84). Another map code is 31/4C found on the LUQS 353 map. Good example of brick dwelling with integrity of form and many original details including peaked cornice and moulded lintels. Tax program date is probably accurate given the style and location of this dwelling.
