In the 1830s, news of southwestern Wisconsin’s lead mines attracted large numbers of immigrants from Cornwall, England's hard-rock mining district. The Civil War brought an increased demand for lead, and technological advances made it possible to process the companion deposits of zinc.
In 1868, during this second industrial boom, the residents of British Hollow built this school, because Cornish miners generally immigrated with their families. The school served the community until 1957.
Builder William Smith constructed the limestone building in a vernacular expression of the Greek Revival style, with its triangular pediment suggested by cornice returns and supported by simple but attenuated classical columns. A square cupola with louvered openings in the shape of a Palladian window, arched at center, once housed the school bell. Smith added the perpendicular wing in 1875 to accommodate the growing number of students.
The front elevation faces south with a large recessed porch at the east end of the facade. A below-grade garage with overhead door has been added to the east side of the building and is accessed by a paved driveway. The re-survey of January 2012 noted that the porch railing has been removed.
