The church was started by the First Methodist's on the east side in 1852 and was known as the Jackson St. Church and was an adjunct of the Spring St. Methodist Church (First Methodist). The Spring St. Church was destroyed by fire in 1854 and then merged with Jackson St. In 1856 the second church was built at Van Buren and Kilbourn. In 1935 the church merged with the Immanuel German Methodist church. The current church was named in honor of an Irish Methodist minister. There is a large group of Italians in the congregation. The congregation at present is largely Italian Protestants.
