Additional Comments
Fox River Valley Industrial Survey The Tuttle Press Company was established in Elgin, Illinois in 1898 by A. F. Tuttle. The firm moved to Appleton in 1901, where the small business rented space until 1906, when it constructed a new plant at the corner of Union and Hancock Streets. The Tuttle Press Company, located at 600 East Hancock Street, printed on plain paper and tissue acquired from local paper mills. The two-story brick building served as a warehouse and printing press facility, producing wrapping paper among other products. According to fire insurance maps, the company occupied the northern half of the present site by 1911 and built two large additions in the following decade. The company also occupied the block to the east as a storage yard. By the 1940s, the business had expanded to fill out the entire city block with a single two-story concrete building. The building is presently occupied by Appleton Papers and Mach IV Motors, among others. The Tuttle Press Company is significant under Criterion A: History in the area of Industry for its role in the Appleton paper industry. The period of significance for the property would extend from 1906 to circa 1970. 2024 - This Astylistic Utilitarian building was constructed in 1906, with an addition in1911 and two more in the 1920s. The two-story complex encompasses an entire city block and is constructed of rough-cut concrete block with areas of corrugated metal siding. The southernmost portion of the building consists of a two-story, flat-roofed building with a straight parapet capped by metal coping. Rows of evenly-spaced window openings on the first and second stories have been filled in – some fully covered and others inset with smaller windows or vents. The center and northern portions of the complex feature a sawtooth roof, though all of the north-facing windows have been covered. The building features no clear entrance; rather, pedestrian and overhead garage doors are located in seemingly random spots on each elevation.
