This five-span railroad bridge was constructed by the Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Sault Ste. Marie in 1918. It is one of four railroad bridges spanning the Chippewa River at this time. Immediately after the construction of this bridge, the "Soo" Railroad Company razed one of its other railroad bridges. This bridge was built to provide convenient access to the new "Soo" Depot which was removed from downtown Chippewa Falls to the south side on Canal Street in 1918. This bridge is of significant local historical interest because it represents the period during the late 19th and early 20th century in which Chippewa Falls' railroad activity was at its peak. It is one of only two railroad bridges surviving from this period. As an important historic-architectural representative of the railroad era, the railway bridge now being used by the Soo Line Railroad needs further research in order to determine its architectural significance. |
