Additional Comments
In 1871 this house was owned by Gustav and Catharine Podoll. Podoll was born in Prussia in 1841. He emigrated to Indiana by himself at the age of 12 in 1853. In 1861 he went back to Prussia to marry a young woman who died two years later. He came to Cedarburg in 1866 and soon married Catharine, a young widow in the general store business. Although he had been working as a photorapher, he stopped that to take over the general store. By 1880, however, he had returned to photography. Catharine was born in Havover ca 1832. They apparently never had children. In 1882 the house was occupied by August Gust. Gust was a laborer born ca 1824 in Prussia. His wife was Johanna and they had one 17 year old daughter in 1880 who worked in the woolen mill. The Gusts came to Wisconsin prior to 1863. For a long time the house was owned by the August and Christina Ott family (1898-1935). August was born in Germany in 1857, Christina in 1853. They both came to the United States in 1880 and got married ca 1882. They had six children. Mr. Ott worked for a mason and when their children were old enough they worked in the woolen mill, the foundry, the chair factory and as a teamster.
