The building opened as an A&W Root Beer stand in the early 1930s in downtown Chippewa Falls. After being sold to Norman Kaste in 1946, the building was relocated to its current location, across the intersection from the city’s public high school (the high school was located on the lot where the Vocational School – now serving as an apartment building – was later built). Through the 1950s and 1960s, the A&W Root Beer drive-in served as the primary social gathering location for high school students with a number of high school boys also employed as car hops. In 1988, the building was sold to a new owner, Mary Ann Smith. Smith continued to operate the property as a drive-in root beer stand until closing it in 1994.
