STEEPLY PITCHED GABLES W/ BARGEBOARDS & KING POST TRUSSES W/ PENDANTS. POLYGONAL BAY W/ MOULDED AND DENTILLED EAVES & MOULDED WOOD PANELS. BAY W/ PAIRED SCROLL CUT BRACKETS. ROUND ARCH PAIRED GABLE WINDOWS W/ BRICK LINTELS. SEGMENTAL ARCH & FLAT ARCH 1ST FLR WINDOWS. THE JOHN O'DAY HOUSE IS SIGNIFICANT UNDER CRITERION C AS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF BRICK GOTHIC REVIVAL STYLE ARCHITECTURE IN MERRILL. ON JUNE 28, 1856 JOHN O'DAY WAS BORN IN ENGLAND, AND HE GREW UP NEAR WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WISCONSIN. AFTER THIRTEEN YEARS OF EMPLOYMENT WITH THE T.B. SCOTT LUMBER COMPANY (NOT EXTANT), O'DAY STARTED HIS OWN LOGGING FIRM WITH JOHN DALY OF WISCONSIN RAPIDS. O'DAY CAME TO MERRILL IN 1881 AND IN 1889 ORGANIZED THE MERRILL RAILWAY AND LIGHTING COMPANY (NOT EXTANT) WITH J.N. COTTER AND OTHERS. HE ALSO ORGANIZED THE MERRILL IRON WORKS AND HELD BUSINESS INTERESTS IN THE GRANDFATHER FALLS PAPER COMPANY. MAYOR OF MERRILL FROM 1904-1905, JOHN O'DAY IN 1906 HELPED ESTABLISH THE MERRILL CHAPTER OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS. O'DAY APPARENTLY HAD THIS HOUSE CONSTRUCTED CIRCA 1900, AND HE LIVED HERE UNTIL AS LATE AS 1921. BY 1930 THE HOUSE IS THE RESIDENCE OF BERNHARD MEYER.
