Lorenzo Dow Harvey was a nationally-known man in the educational field who gained local prominence from his role with the Stout Institute, now called the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Harvey served as President of the National Education Association before serving as Wisconsin State Superintendent from 1899 to 1903. James H. Stout convinced Harvey to leave his post in 1903 to come to Menomonie. The main reason Harvey came to Menomonie was for the Stout Manual Training School, but he also was the superintendent of the County Normal School, the Dunn County School of Agriculture, and the Menomonie Public School System- all at the same time! While at the Stout Institute, he was responsible for bringing new buildings to the campus. The 1914 Trade Building, which has been demolished, and the Household Arts Building, which is now Harvey Hall, are the main buildings credited to Harvey. Lorenzo Harvey was also the first president for what is now known as the University of Wisconsin-Stout. He served as president from 1908 until his death in 1922.
Harvey Hall has had various names and purposes over time. It was originally the Household Arts Building before becoming home to the Home Economics Department and Education & Human Services. Today, it is home to the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and liberal studies program.
A Historic Structure Report of this building can be found in Room 312 at the Wisconsin Historical Society.
