Designed by Charles Kirchhoff in cream brick, the saloon exemplifies the rich, eclectic ornamentation that was often lavished on commercial structures in the 1880s. The building employs a variety of decorative materials, including pressed metal, rock-faced limestone, terracotta, ornamental brickwork, and cast iron. Completely original in form and appearance, including most elements of first floor. Note projecting bays, cornice treatment and use of contrasting materials.

Building on the site of where C. Latham Shoels invented the first practical typewriter in September 1869.
