Additional Comments
A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. 2020-2024 Targeted Resurvey of Sheboygan recommendation write-up: Lake View Park includes a park shelter, playground equipment and a bandstand. The frame-constructed, octagonal bandstand rises from a latticework base and is topped with a low-pitched tent roof that is supported by plain wooden supports. A simple, spindled railing runs the perimeter, less the opening that includes a wooden five-step approach. A light previously hung from the center of the roof. Since initially reviewed in late 2020, the railing is missing a significant number of its spindles, portions of the latticework is missing, and the stair access is now blocked off. Located in what was originally known as the Lake View Shooting Park, this structure was completed in 1926 at an estimated cost of $1,290. In 1912, a group of forty-three shareholders of the Lake Front Shooting Park Association, which owned the 10-acre site since 1895, offered the parcel to the city for use as a park for $6,000. In March 1915, the land was deeded to the city. As of 1937, Lake View Shooting Park consisted of a total of 14 acres and was one of a total of twelve city parks. An additional (approximately) 10 acres to the south was purchased from the Wisconsin Power and Light Co. in 1970 at a cost of $54,000. In 1979, the park was officially named Lake View Park. June 2024 observations - The Lakeview Shooting Park Bandstand is an octagonal single-story open structure approximately twenty-five feet in diameter. Constructed with a simple wood frame structure, the bandstand has a low-pitched tent roof with asphalt shingles and metal ball and finial at the center. Under the eaves are the eight openings, all identical, with simple wood corbels and arches. The ceiling and soffits are beadboard and the deck is tongue and groove wood boards. Along seven sides are a simple wood railing, which is badly damaged and are missing many balusters. The south facing elevation of the eight openings has a set of wood stairs on a concrete base. The other seven sides have a latticework base fixed to a plywood sheathing near the ground The structure is painted and in fair condition. The surrounding Lakeview Park covers 19-acres has a flat terrain with many trees along the shore of Lake Michigan. The park contains a shelter, playground equipment, a parking lot, and the old bandstand. The bandstand is the only remaining element from an early-to mid-twentieth century amusement park.
