Summary

Daniel Smith House
331 North Lake Street, Prescott, Pierce County
Date of Construction: 1855

Daniel Smith built this fine Greek Revivals style home in 1855. Smith was a well-known member of the community and was one of the founders of the county's first agricultural society. He also chaired the organizational meeting of the Pierce County Democratic Club, was a city assessor, and the county coroner. Salome Smith, Daniel's wife, operated one of Prescott's earliest schools in this house. Smith sold the house to Norman Dunbar in 1864.

Dunbar first settled in the Prescott area in 1849 and operated a dry goods store and hotel. He also was the county’s first sheriff, city alderman, the county supervisor, as well as the treasurer of the first school board and of the Prescott Masonic Lodge.

In 1871 Dunbar sold the house to Matthew H. Dill who was known as one of Prescott's most prominent citizens. He too owned a dry goods store, but he also was a successful grain merchant, cattle dealer, and land developer. With his wealth he supported many of the local social institutions and the construction of the First Congregational Church. He lived in the home until 1889.

The Smith House is a private residence. Please respect the rights and privacy of the residents.
