Bristle Thighed Curlew

A hand-colored lithograph prepared by Wm. E. Hitchcock from William Heine's drawings of a male specimen of Numenius tahiticus (now Numenius tahitiensis) collected near Hakodate on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. The drawing of the head and bill is adult size. "Gmelin" refers to the German naturalist Johann Friedrich Gmelin (1748-1804), who assigned the scientific name in 1789.
