Obed Hussey

Image

Quarter-length portrait of inventor Obed Hussey (1782?-1860) as it appeared in W.T. Hutchinson's biography of Cyrus Hall McCormick. He is wearing an eye patch over his left eye. Hussey demonstrated a mechanical reaper around the same time that Cyrus McCormick first demonstrated his machine. Hussey and McCormick were parties in a lengthy lawsuit regarding the invention of the "first reaper."
