Fairchild House

Exterior view of the Fairchild House at 302 South Wisconsin Avenue (renamed Monona Avenue in 1877) at W. Wilson St. near Lake Monona. The house was constructed in 1850 by Jarius Fairchild and was substantially altered with additions. After the Civil War, the house became the home of Fairchild's son, Lucius, Civil War hero, Wisconsin governor (1866-72) and foreign diplomat. During his six years as governor, the Fairchild House was the state's executive residence, as no such property was then owned by the state. The residence was therefore a focus of Madison's political and social life during the last half of the 19th century.
