Tower Hill Smelter

A marker at the former site of the smelter which stood at the top of the shot tower shaft. The sign reads: "Tower Hill State Park The Old Shot Tower At this point stood the smelter. The lead from Dodgeville and other points south was smelted here. The molten metal was dropped through 200 feet of vertical shaft becoming perfectly spherical in form, then suddenly chilled in the well at the bottom. The Drilling through the rock took 187 days and was all done by hand."
