Hoan Bridge to Nowhere

The bridge over the Milwaukee Harbor named in honor of former Mayor Daniel Hoan. The bridge was constructed between 1970 and 1972, but during the period depicted here, it was a "bridge to nowhere" because of local backlash against the Milwaukee freeway system. The bridge finally opened in 1977 as part of the route of I-794. In 2000 the Hoan Bridge was again in the news when several girders cracked as a result of outmoded bridge joint design, extreme cold, and heavy trucks. The bridge reopened on October 31, 2001.
