Full-length carte-de-visite portrait of Major General George B. McClellan holding his sword in his left hand. At Major General in the Regular Army. After the First Manassas be was promoted to Commander of the Army of the Potomac, and by November 1861 he was appointed General-in-Chief of the Armies of the United States, where he would serve until November 1862 when the War Department ordered him home to await orders.
