Alabama A and M College professor Dorothea Smith speaking at a press conference. She was one of 51 mathematics teachers from 40 predominantly Negro colleges who attended the University of Wisconsin's eight-week mathematics institute. Its purpose was 'to upgrade their teaching' and to 'discuss recent changes in mathematics.'
