Bascom Hill Elms
Image
Tall, spreading elms line the sidewalks leading up the mall to Bascom Hall on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. Van Vleck Hall is to the left. Students are sitting and lying on the grass of the mall. The elms were planted in the 1850's. In 2004, 16 of the Bascom Hill Elms had survived Dutch elm disease and were still living. As of October 2016, only three of the large old elms remained.
