A Menominee ceremonial dance. The dancers are wearing Native American ceremonial dress. Although Roman Catholic missions had banned many Native American ceremonies and dances, rules were gradually relaxed as dances became tourist attractions rather than forms of religious expression. Note the drum circle worn in the grass. This image is part of an exhibit about Native Americans prepared by Paul Vanderbilt, the Wisconsin Historical Society's first curator of photography.
