Portrait of John Peter Altgeld, a Union veteran of the Civil War, judge, lawyer, and politician. Altgeld was a Progressive Democrat and the 20th Governor of Illinois (1893-1897). He previously served as Judge of the Superior Court of Cook County (1886-1891).
