Vignetted quarter-length portrait of Frederick Layton, at about age 50. Layton was the son of a Milwaukee butcher and ran the business until his retirement. He used his fortune to build the Layton Art Gallery and also contributed to the Layton Home for Incurables (Invalids).

Frederick Layton gave this hand-colored photograph of himself in his garden on Marshall Street to his niece Elizabeth Layton Fowle on August 8, 1914. He died in 1919.
