Washington Elementary School Listed in the State Register of Historic Places
JANESVILLE, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of Washington Elementary school in Janesville (Rock County) on the State Register of Historic Places. The school is located at 811 North Pine Street.
Washington Elementary School was constructed in 1939 in fulfillment of the Janesville Board of Education’s early 20th century building program that established a three-tier system of graded elementary, junior high, and senior high schools. It is one of four elementary schools constructed in Janesville between 1929 and 1939 and is one of the four oldest operating elementary schools in the city. The building has been expanded twice to meet changing educational needs.
Washington Elementary School is a locally significant example of the Classical Revival style as seen in the years between World War I and World War II. It was designed by the prominent architecture firm Law, Law, and Potter of Madison. The first addition in 1952 was designed by the same firm to match the aesthetic of the original school building. A second addition was constructed 1994 on the rear elevation with minimal impact to the historic character of the original school and the earlier addition.
The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
