Thern Farmstead Listed on the State Register of Historic Places

NEW LONDON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Thern Farmstead in New London, Outagamie County, on the State Register of Historic Places. State Historic Preservation Officer Daina Penkiunas presents a certificate to Megan Koehler, Betty Neuzil, Kristin Dedering, and Harrison Dedering.

The Thern Farmstead, situated on the banks of the Embarrass River, is a fine example of an early twentieth-century Outagamie County farmstead associated with dairy farming. In the late nineteenth century, the farm was the site of the New London City Fair and several of the farm buildings date to the period. As the popularity of the fair waned, the land was sold to George Thern and his family, who established a family farm. 

The centennial farm has a house that dates to 1881 and an assortment of agricultural wood-frame outbuildings. The Thern farm specialized in dairy and honey production through most of the twentieth century and is one of the few remaining farmsteads in Outagamie County with integrity to its period of construction. It is now owned by the New London Heritage Historical Society.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and the National Register in Wisconsin.
