Milwaukee Jewish Home for the Aged Listed in the State Register of Historic Places

MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Milwaukee Jewish Home for the Aged in Milwaukee on the State Register of Historic Places. From 1930 to the 1960s, the facility at 2436 North 50th Street served elderly members of Milwaukee’s Jewish community.

The Jewish Home based their philosophy on the tenets of Judaism while providing necessary medical treatment that adapted to the growing and evolving needs of the elderly over the course of its 45 years of use. The home is an example of early-twentieth century elderly housing and its evolution as elderly populations and life expectancy increased.

After operating in a Victorian house starting in 1906, the Jewish Home accommodated 30 residents when they moved to their new, dedicated building in 1930. Over time, the Jewish Home expanded to accommodate more residents and to update their medical services, reflecting the new and expanding field of geriatric medicine. The Jewish Home moved to a new facility in the 1960s and the building later became an alcoholic rehabilitation center.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
