Jay and Bernice Grimm House Listed in the State Register of Historic Places

RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Jay and Bernice Grimm House in River Falls (Pierce County) on the State Register of Historic Places.

Constructed in 1915, the Grimm House is a relatively rare example of a Craftsman style airplane bungalow. The house has a compact design with a small half story projecting from the center of the roof that contains a sleeping porch with windows on all sides. With elevated views that evoked the feel of an airplane cockpit, houses like this became known as “airplane bungalows.”

The Grimm House is an excellent example of a Craftsman style bungalow with its low-pitched roofs with widely overhanging eaves and exposed rafter ends, a dominant front porch with heavy masonry piers and tapered wood columns, decorative half-timbering under the gables, leaded-glass windows, and extensive interior woodwork including built-in fixtures. Jay Grimm, a lawyer, and his wife Bernice built their house on what was then the eastern edge of town.

The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
