Grimm House Listed in the National Register of Historic Places
RIVER FALLS, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Grimm House in the National Register of Historic Places on January 29, 2025. The building was originally constructed in 1915 in River Falls, Pierce County.
The Jay and Bernice Grimm House is a fine example of a Craftsman style airplane bungalow constructed in 1915. This style looks like a Craftsman house, but its distinctive characteristic includes a pop-up second story that emerges from the first story roof-line. The second story space is commonly small, consisting of one or two rooms to provide a larger residential area for a small footprint. An unusual style for Wisconsin, there are only a few known examples across the state.
The Grimm House exhibits a compact bungalow plan with a diminutive upper half story that contains a sleeping porch and windows on each elevation. Its Craftsman style is exemplified by low-pitched gable and hipped roofs with widely overhanging eaves and exposed rafter ends, a dominant front porch with heavy masonry piers and battered wood columns, and decorative half-timbering under the gable ends. The house also displays decorative leaded glass and art-glass windows and extensive interior woodwork including built-in fixtures. This combination of form and stylistic features renders the house an excellent example of an early 20th-century Craftsman style airplane bungalow.
