Clintonville Federal Savings and Loan Association Building Listed in the State Register of Historic Places
CLINTONVILLE, Wis. - The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Clintonville Federal Savings and Loan Association building in Clintonville (Waupaca County) on the State Register of Historic Places. The building is located at 60 10th Street in Clintonville. State Historic Preservation Officer Daina Penkiunas presented a certificate to Michael McQuillen.
The Clintonville Federal Savings and Loan Association (Clintonville FS&LA) is an outstanding and intact example of the Contemporary style. The floor plan is a series of overlapping circles. The building is asymmetrical, curvilinear, and horizontal in character with a flat roof. Floor-to-ceiling windows curve around sections of the building between walls faced with fieldstone and concrete, materials that continue inside the building along with wood.
The interior retains its open plan and original finishes including acoustical plaster ceilings, fieldstone-veneer walls, and painted concrete block walls. The building still has its vault with stainless-steel door, open stairs, and suspended “ceiling clouds.” Designed by Green Bay architect Quentin Hofman and built in 1965, the Clintonville FS&LA is a distinct representation of the Contemporary style as applied to a mid-20th century financial institution.
The State Register is Wisconsin's official list of state properties determined to be significant to Wisconsin's heritage. The State Historic Preservation Office at the Wisconsin Historical Society administers both the State Register and National Register in Wisconsin.
