| Additional Information: | 2023: Plat maps and atlases of Vernon County indicate the property was that of Anton Nelson and was constructed between 1878 and 1896. The Anton Nelson Farmstead stands along Knapp Valley Road in the vicinity of an earlier saw mill in Section 30 of the Town of Clinton, Vernon County. As it stands, the farmstead consists of a log house (72152), log barn (72153), and frame barn (246181). The log house is a one and one-half story house gabled ell type single-family dwelling constructed circa 1895. The T-shaped plan consists of a side-gabled volume parallel to the road with a rear gabled volume extending from its center. Gabled dormers rise symmetrically through the north and south roof slopes of the rear wing. The foundation is constructed of stone that has been heavily parged with mortar and patched with brick. The walls are constructed of square hewn logs stacked and adjoined with dovetail notching. The moderate gaps are chinked with mortar. The gable ends are glad in vertical wood planks. The windows are 2-over-2 fixed wood sash windows and 2-over-2 hung wood sash windows. The original entrance in the south elevation has been partially boarded and infilled with a horizontal fixed sash window. A one-story, shed roof enclosed porch has been constructed in the east ell of the wings and appears to house the relocated entrance. 1976: Identified in Tishler's "Early Buildings in Coon Valley" as site 35. Barn also on property. |
