NOTES
Additional Information:DESIGNED IN THE COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR STYLE, THIS TWO STORY RETAIL BUILDING WAS CONSTURUCTED IN 1866. (SEE BIB. REF. A). IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, A STONE FOUNDATION, A STONE EXTERIOR, A STONE TRIM, AND A FLAT ROOF. SMALL, PROJECTING WINDOW LINTELS DISTINGUISH THE SECOND-STORY ONE-OVER-ONE WINDOWS. THESE LINTELS ARE SIMILAR IN FORM TO THE ONES LOCATED ON THE ADJACENT AND RELATED BUILDING, AT 222 HIGH STREET, (SEE PHOTO CODE 43/26). 232 HIGH STREET IS IN GOOD CONDITION.

THIS BUILDING (232 HIGH) WAS KNOWN HISTORICALLY AS THE H. S. CLAUER DRY GOODS AND GROCERY STORE. (SEE BIB. REF. A). THE GROCERY BUSINESS EXISTED AT THIS SITE FROM 1866 TO 1894. (SEE BIB. REF. A). OTHER COMMERCIAL VENTURES LOCATED AT 232 HIGH STREET INCLUDED THE MR. MURROUGH AND DOYLE GROCERY IN 1917, AND THE DOYLE BROS. BUSINESS IN 1924.

2012- "Built by Henry S. Clauer, a dry goods merchant who came from Bavaria in 1853. Charles Gale established a grocery business in this building in 1884. A native of Norwich, Connecticut, Gale previously had been a merchant in Darlington and the agent for the Mineral Point Railroad.

The building originally had projecting hoods over each window and a decorative cornice topped by a finial. The cornice fell to the street in 1912, killing a passerby. The window hoods were replaced with flat concrete lintels and the storefront was severely altered some time after 1970.

Also known as the NeCollins building, other businesses at this location were Gale's Cash Grocery; B.J.Coykendall, dentist; McMurrough & Doyle Grocery; Sam Mead's second store; and Town and Coutry shop."
