| Additional Information: | DESCRIPTION: This large 2 1/2 story house of a rectangular plan features narrow clapboards on the first and second story and tarpaper shingle sin the front end and side gables with return cornices. This side projection enclosed the entry at the setback corner and the original 3/1 rectangular windows are in place throughout the house. The front gable features a group of three rectangular windows and the side gable features one. The entry has a canopy, however, it appears that there may have once been a wraparound veranda. SIGNIFICANCE: This house is considered architecturally significant for its pivotal role in the proposed Ellis Avenue district as a local-example of the vernacular Late Picturesque style. This 1916 period is difficult to classify stylistically, yet this well-proportioned house with original windows, gables with return cornices that were probably always shingled, and the gable projection over the entry, is a well-preserved example. distinguishing details also include the triplet of windows in the gable and the projection's fenestration. The house compares well to others of its type throughout Ashland such as those on Chapple Avenue. |
